San Antonio Museum of Art

San Antonio Museum of Art, otherwise known as SAMA, has gained a prestigious reputation for exhibiting art from all across the world. From historical pieces to contemporary art, SAMA is the one spot that has multiple cultures and eras depicted under one roof. It’s an attraction you can’t skip when you’re visiting San Antonio.

About the Museum

In 1926, the San Antonio Museum Association gathered art pieces on Texas history and displayed them in Witte Memorial Museum. As the years passed by, the Witte Memorial Museum lacked space for the entire fine arts collection, which is why the association took over the Lone Star Brewery and converted it into San Antonio’s museum, officially opening it for the public in 1981.

What Can You See at SAMA?

This museum is on its own a cultural gem, where you can find American, Asian, Mediterranean, and native history art. The contemporary side shows artwork by modern artists too, so it’s not just a history class but the ultimate spot for artistic inspiration. Here are some things you should look out for when planning to visit the museum:

  1. Exclusive Events: SAMA has premiere events occasionally to liven up artistic souls every once in a while. Exclusive events allow visitors to participate in various types of activities for kids and adults alike, such as seminars, workshops, new collection launches, holiday specials, and playdates, to name a few.
  2. Permanent Collections: The permanent collections at SAMA take you through 5000 years of a rich, historical perspective through different cultures, traditions, and nations. You’ll see Greek, Roman, American, Latin American, Asian, European, and Islamic art, among others. Prepare to spend 2-3 hours mesmerized by artwork the likes of which you may not have seen before.
  3. Seasonal Exhibits: These feature seasonal artwork that the SAMA association displays every few months, each with a unique theme of its own. Even if you’ve visited the museum before, seasonal exhibits are worth another trip downtown.
